Liberal Democrat Councillors in meeting over Muslim burials

2.00.00pm GMT Tue 1st Mar 2005

Three Liberal Democrat Councillors have met with Alison Harwood and Rick Powell of Bereavement Services at Birmingham Council. Councillor Tariq Khan (Washwood Heath), Councillor Dilawar Khan (Sparkbrook) and Councillor Tanveer Choudhry (Springfield) have met to discuss issues and concerns in relation to Muslim burials.

The Councillors raised concerns that there has been an increase in demand in the Muslim Community to bury bodies in the Handsworth area and this needs to be addressed, particularly in relation to hours when burials can occur and space between graves. The meeting also discussed the new cemetery in Kings Norton.
