John Hemming, Liberal Democrat MP for Birmingham Yardley is writing to Malcolm Wicks MP, the Energy Minister, to ask key questions about planning for gas rationing for this winter.

"If we have a cold winter," he said, "we could see a shortage of supply of gas. Although it may not happen this winter it is important that the government put in contingency plans. The UK's "dash for gas" of recent years makes the UK particularly reliant on gas supplies. Any contingency planning has to be done well in advance and the people should be consulted on proposals."
