Cancellation of Council Tax revaluation shows Labour's disregard for pensioner poverty - Teather

2.39.12pm GMT Fri 14th Oct 2005

Responding to the publication of the Council Tax Valuation Lists Bill, to cancel Council Tax revaluation, Liberal Democrat Local Government spokesperson, Sarah Teather MP, said "Today's announcement proves Labour doesn't have the courage to make even small changes to the system of local taxation. Under Labour there's no hope of a decent and fair tax system."

Ms. Teather further said "The Government may have got out of a sticky situation by cancelling revaluation, but this does nothing to help the millions of pensioners and low-paid families who struggle week after week to pay their Council Tax bills. Revaluation or no revaluation, Council Tax is Britain's most unfair tax and it has to go. Labour's determination to keep this Tory Tax shows that they simply don't care about the low paid, about pensioners, or about social justice."
