Responding to a survey in the Health Service Journal which shows that 75% of NHS bosses say patient care will suffer because of the current cash crisis, Steve Webb MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said "The cash crisis in the NHS is clearly spiraling out of control and ministers show no sign of getting to grips with the problem."

Professor Webb further said "Financial instability is hitting frontline services and the rapid pace of reform is only making things worse. The Government must put the breaks on the helter-skelter pace of change in the NHS to prevent untold damage being done to the quality of healthcare."
