Sir Menzies calls for less legislation, better government and a new Home Secretary3.51.17pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 3rd May 2006 As the Government today announced plans that would see all overseas criminals convicted of serious crimes deported immediately, Sir Menzies Campbell said what was needed was "less legislation, better government and a new Home Secretary". Nick Clegg, Shadow Home Secretary said of the announcement "We will look positively at any measures to speed up deportation where is it justified. However, the present crisis has nothing to do with the content of legislation and everything to do with a failure to enforce rules that already exist. The Home Secretary has extensive powers to deport foreign prisoners - the scandal is that he hasn't used them."
