This week saw the Republicans lose control of both the US Senate and House of Representatives, reacting to these mid-term results President George Bush has sacked Donald Rumsfeld as Defence Secretary. Commenting Sir Menzies Campbell, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, said "Donald Rumsfeld has paid the price for a policy of which he was the principal architect and whose implementation has been disastrous."

Making comparisons with the UK Sir Menzies further said "No Minister in the in the UK has taken anything like the same responsibility for our Government's policy. The British public will draw their own conclusions."
