Campbell on Crime - Liberal Democrats offer results not gimmicks

9.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 4th Jan 2007

In a major BBC interview, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell has set out why crime is an important issue for Liberal Democrats and why it will be the subject of a big campaign for the party, to be launched later this month. Sir Menzies Campbell said "I know a little bit about crime myself because, for nearly four years of my professional life, I prosecuted serious crime like murder and rape and armed robbery and I know just how damaging it can be to victims."

Sir Menzies further said "I know just how corrosive it can be, and I am determined that the Liberal Democrats will, in their policy, and in their application of that policy, show that they are much more effective at dealing with these matters than the kind of initiative-driven and gimmick-driven approach we have had from the Government."
