Campbell challenges Government to support the Sustainable Communities Bill6.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 26th Mar 2007
Speaking at a rally tonight to promote the Sustainable Communities Bill, Liberal Democrat Leader Menzies Campbell will challenge the Labour government to support it. The Bill, now in its Committee stage thanks to the support of opposition MPs, aims to give more power to local communities to counteract the influence of multi-national business and central government. Originally introduced by Julia Goldsworthy MP for the Lib Dems in 2002, the bill has already been defeated once by the government. Sir Menzies said "This bill will put the interests of local people at the forefront of policy making. And it will put the heart back into local communities throughout this country. I am proud to support it. And I challenge Ruth Kelly and the Labour Government to do the same."
