Councillor Paul Tilsley and the Lib Dems are calling for free personal care for the elderly.

Local Liberal Democrats have renewed their calls for the Government to provide free care for the elderly as a matter of urgency.

The Government claim that free care would cost too much money and they can not afford to pay. "This is just an excuse," commented Lib Dem Councillor Paul Tilsley. "They had enough money to pay for the war in Iraq but not to provide free care for the elderly. They have got their priorities wrong."

During the last ten years 500,000 people have been forced to sell their homes to pay for their long term care needs. This situation is totally unacceptable and could be prevented if they Government decided to pay long term care costs. A Liberal Democrat motion calling on the Government to provide free personal care was adopted by Birmingham City Council at its meeting on Tuesday 9 October 2007.
