Proposals for more Post Offices are "a real tragedy", says Lib Dem MP John Hemming.

Yardley Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming has described another round of Post Office closures as "a real tragedy" and condemned the Government and Post Office bosses for letting customers down again.

A further 2,500 Post Offices nationwide will be closed next year. There are fears that up to 40 or 50 branches across Birmingham could be closed.

John Hemming said: "The Labour Government plans to shut down branches bit by bit. These closures are based on wrong assumptions about the network and the profitability of sub-post offices."

"Post Offices play an essential part in many communities and the Liberal Democrats are opposed to the closures," he added.

"It is a real tragedy what is happening with the Post Offices in Birmingham. There is going to be well-run profitable Post Offices that will have to close because the Government has got its maths wrong."

"It's a totally unfair situation and the public will lose out.''
