Boost for Birmingham Libraries

Liberal Democrats in Birmingham have welcomed extra investment in local libraries.

Liberal Democrats in Birmingham have welcomed the news that funding of £1.4 million has been secured from the Big Lottery Fund for the expansion and renovation of five libraries in some of the city's most disadvantaged areas.

Councillor Ray Hassall, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport & Culture, said: "Birmingham Libraries have a strong record for creativity and innovation and we will build on this to make a real difference. It will enable us to create new flexible learning spaces in five of our community libraries which will be equipped to cater for performances, presentations, exhibitions, meetings and events as well as learning sessions and workshops."

"The main aim is to empower residents - especially those who are isolated or excluded in their communities - we want them to make a contribution and these new areas will give them the skills and confidence to do so."

This additional investment follows the launch of brand new, self-service Neighbourhood Libraries in local Community Centres and Leisure Centres around the City. Three Neighbourhood Libraries are already open at Hawkesley Community Centre, Kingsbury School / Leisure Centre in Erdington and St Michael's in Hall Green. Three more will open soon in Newtown, Farm Road in Sparkbrook and at Woodview, Edgbaston.
