Halt Post Office closures: John Hemming MP and Lib Dem councillors are campaigning to save local post offices from closure.

Birmingham Lib Dem MP John Hemming is calling on the Government to immediately halt the "big mistake" of closing post offices across Birmingham. The Post Office announced the decision to close 26 post offices across Birmingham on 24 June 2008.

John Hemming said: "The Government is making a big mistake by proposing to close down so many of our post offices here in Birmingham. It will be a massive blow to people who have mobility problems and who rely on them. They really should call a halt to these proposals."

Birmingham's Liberal Democrat councillors have joined John Hemming in the call to save local post offices.

Speaking outside the Shaftmoor Lane post office, Councillor Tanveer Choudhry (Springfield Ward) said: "I have spoken to many local people who have told me how vital their post office is to them. This is just the first step in the battle, but we will be fighting hard to keep them open."

Councillor Roger Harmer (Acocks Green Ward) added: "Like other post offices, the Shaftmoor Lane post office is vital for the community and crucial for many people. This is just the first step in the campaign and we will be fighting hard against the plans."

The proposed closures in Birmingham are the latest is a series of closures that have decimate the post office network. Labour have already shut 4,000 post offices, following the 3,500 closures under the last Conservative Government.

The Lib Dems want to invest in our post office network to give local customers a better deal. We believe that post offices should have a bright future.
