Liberal Democrats support Birmingham Pride4.16.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 25th May 2009
This Saturday Liz Lynne, the Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the West Midlands, helped David Nikel and the Ladywood Campaign team on the Liberal Democrat stall at Birmingham Pride. Liz spoke to members of the LGBT Community about her work in the European Parliament, promoting equality for same sex couples through the Partners Without Borders campaign. Also helping on the stall were John Hemming MP (Birmingham Yardley), several volunteers from the expanding West Midlands Liberal Youth, plus Councillors, members and supporters from across the city. Liz also took time to visit other stalls in the community area, including UNISON, Barnados and Birmingham LGBT Community Trust, where she learned about the new SHOUT LGBT cultural festival to be held in November 2009. David Nikel, local Ladywood campaigner and organiser of the stall, said "I would like to thank Liz Lynne MEP for helping out on the stall promoting the Liberal Democrats at Birmingham Pride. This helped reinforce the great work for equality and LGBT rights that are a key part of what the Liberal Democrats stand for." At a time when so many people have been put off politics, visitors to the stall really appreciated Liz taking the time to get out and about engaging with the public. It's more important than ever for our politicians to be open and accessible."
